DALLAS (NCBWA) – The catalyst behind Emory University averaging over 20 runs per game during a four-game University Athletic Association series despite three of the four games being called after seven innings due to the run rule, a no-hitter on the celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of the founding of the program, and a nine-RBI doubleheader took home this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Div. III Hitter, Pitcher, and Rookie of the Week awards. This week’s selections were chosen based on games played April 3-9.
HITTER OF THE WEEK
Emory University (Georgia) sophomore third baseman Jack Halloran had a monster weekend during the Eagles’ four-game sweep over Brandeis University (Massachusetts). Halloran went 13-for-18 (.722) with 19 RBI, 15 runs, five home runs, and three doubles, and he established four program records. Halloran had three hits or more in three of the four wins, including a 5-for-5 game on Saturday where he launched three home runs, drove in nine, and scored five times. He became the second Eagle to hit three home runs in a single game. Emory hammered Brandeis 12-1, 31-4, 31-7, and 9-1, with the first three games being halted after seven innings due to the run differential. Halloran was part of this week’s D3baseball.com Team of the Week and was the University Athletic Association Hitter of the Week.
Honorable Mention Hitter: Dane Camphausen, Sr., 1B, The College of Wooster (Ohio) – D3baseball.com Team of the Week selection after slashing .579/.667/1.368 during a five-game stretch for the Fighting Scots. Camphausen went 11-for-19 on the week with 11 RBI, 10 runs, five walks, four homers, and three doubles. He became the 15th player in program history to hit 30 career homers, reaching that milestone in Saturday’s doubleheader with Wittenberg University (Ohio). He clubbed three home runs in Tuesday’s sweep over Kenyon College (Ohio).
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
John Carroll University (Ohio) senior right-hander Matthew Aukerman faced one batter over the minimum during Saturday’s nine-inning no-hitter against Capital University (Ohio). Aukerman led the Blue Streaks to the 14-0 victory over the Comets, striking out six in his outing. The no-hitter came on the day the Blue Streaks celebrated 50 years of John Carroll baseball. It marked the third no-hitter in program history and the first for the program since 1986. Aukerman was named to D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week and was the Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Honorable Mention Pitcher: Tyler Horvat, Sr., Washington & Jefferson College (Pennsylvania) – Posted a pair of Presidents’ Athletic Conference wins last week for the Presidents. The senior right-hander tossed a complete game to lift W&J to a 2-1 win over Grove City College (Pennsylvania) on Monday, allowing a run on five hits with six strikeouts. He then worked eight innings in a 10-3 win over Chatham University (Pennsylvania) on Sunday and struck out a season-high 10 batters in the win over the Cougars. He posted 16 strikeouts and walked just one over 17 innings of work. Horvat was the PAC Pitcher of the Week.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Southern Virginia University’s Ty Martinez went a combined 8-for-12 (.667) with 10 RBI, eight runs, four doubles, two home runs, and a walk on the week. The first-year outfielder went 7-for-9 with nine RBI, seven runs scored, two home runs, and a walk during a Saturday sweep over Mary Baldwin University (Virginia). Martinez was the USA South Athletic Conference Player and Rookie of the Week.
