INDIANAPOLIS (USBWA) – Scott Gyimesi of Tufts University (Medford, Mass.) and Elyse Warren of Millsaps College (Jackson, Miss.) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the period ending January 4.
Gyimesi, a 6-6 senior forward from Fair Haven, N.J., posted a pair of double-doubles to lead No. 13 (D3hoops.com) Tufts to a pair of victories last week. On Wednesday, he hit the game-winner in the final second to lift the Jumbos to a 79-77 win against Clark. Gyimesi finished the game with 22 points (10-of-14 FG, 1-of-1 FT, 1-of-1 3FG), 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Then, in Saturday’s 70-52 victory at then-No. 16 (D3hoops.com) Worcester Polytechnic Institute, he totaled 24 points (9-of-15 FG, 5-of-7 FT, 1-of-3 3FG), 13 rebounds, an assist, and two steals. For the week, Gyimesi averaged 23.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 0.5 blocks, while shooting 65.5 percent (19-of-29) from the field, 75.0 percent (6-of-8) from the foul line and 50 percent (2-of-4) from three-point range. For his efforts, Gyimesi was also named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week for the sixth time this season.
Warren, a 5-9 senior center from Memphis, Tenn., had an historic week as Millsaps recorded a pair of victories. On Tuesday, she double-doubled with 15 points (6-of-11 FG, 3-of-6 FT) and 16 rebounds, while adding an assist and steal in the Majors’ 81-69 victory over Ozarks. Then, in Saturday’s 55-36 road win at Rhodes, Warren pulled down a school-record 33 rebounds, the highest amount at any NCAA level this season and the most in Division III since 2018. She completed her double-double with a career-high 24 points (11-of-20 FG, 2-of-4 FT) to go with an assist and two steals. For the week, Warren averaged 19.5 points, 24.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.5 steals while shooting 54.8 percent (17-of-31) from the field and 50.0 percent (5-of-10) from the foul line. For her efforts, Warren was also selected the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division III National Players of the Week. This is the 11th season that the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division III.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers.
