Gold, Eddie, Orvis and Meissner honored as NCBWA Division III National Players of the Week

DALLAS (NCBWA) – A cycle, a near no-hitter, a shutout and a healthy portion of extra-base hits captured the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Div. III honors for the week of March 3-9.

HITTER OF THE WEEK

Pomona-Pitzer (California) sophomore outfielder Jack Gold helped the 10th-ranked Sagehens to a 3-0 week that included a victory over nationally ranked UW-La Crosse by unleashing a slash line of .818/.867/1.909 at the plate, tallying multiple hits in every contest while driving in nine and scoring six times. The left-handed hitter opened the week with a 3-for-4 showing in the first game of a doubleheader, hitting a pair of homers including the first of back-to-back-to-back blasts in the third. Deuces were wild in the second game as Gold finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a pair of walks. The Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. native capped the week by hitting for the cycle against UW-La Crosse, finishing 4-for-5. Gold capped the feat with a single in the seventh inning. The SCIAC Hitter of the Week was retired just twice during the week.

Honorable Mention Hitter: Wyatt Harrar, So., 1B, Moravian University (Pennsylvania) batted .471 over seven games, finishing 8-of-19 at the dish. Harrar homered five times and seven of the eight hits were for extra bases. The Quakertown, Pa. native opened the week with three hits, including a pair of homers, one of which was a grand slam. Harrar also finished with a homer and three RBIs in each end of a doubleheader, finishing the week with a 1.316 slugging percentage to go with a .586 OBP, bolstered by eight walks and a hit by pitch.    

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Buena Vista University (Iowa) senior pitcher Mark Eddie logged a career week. The right-hander won both of his starts, spinning quality outings in each affair. Facing St. Mary’s (Minnesota) on March 3, Eddie carried a no-hitter into the eighth and tossed a career best 7.2 innings while equaling his career best strikeout total by punching out 11 hitters in a 3-0 victory. The American Rivers Conference Pitcher of the Week returned five days later to throw seven more innings, allowing just four hits in a one-run victory while striking out nine. Eddie allowed just one run in 14.2 innings of work while striking out 20 and also earned a slot on the D3baseball.com Team of the Week.

Honorable Mention Pitcher: Sean Brennan, Sr., Keystone College (Pennsylvania) allowed just three hits in six shutout innings during his lone appearance of the week, striking out 13.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Kalamazoo College (Michigan) starter Carson Orvis and Bethany Lutheran College (Minnesota) infielder Xavier Meissner share the Rookie of the Week honor. Orvis was dominant on the mound in a Sunday shutout, earning his second win of the year. The lefty did not walk a batter and allowed just four hits while striking out nine in a seven-inning victory. Meissner was an extra-base machine as over half of his hits on the week resulted in more than one base. The Parker, Colo. native was 9-for-15 at the plate with five walks, posting an OBP of .636. Meissner drove home 11 runs on the week and posted three doubles to go with a pair of homers.
